Four patients died because of staff failings

North Middlesex hospital has admitted that four patients died after errors made by staff in A&E and other departments.

The Guardian have seen documents that show safety failings at the hospital since 2014, and that the A&E unit has been threatened with closure on safety grounds.

The quality of care and safety at the hospital has shocked National NHS bodies and regulators.

Two of the four deaths, which occurred in 2014 and 2015, happened in the A&E department. The hospital has admitted that errors and poor care contributed to the deaths.

Whilst it has apologies it went on to say that the deaths were not statistically significant. In a statement they said: “We deeply regret all these incidents and acknowledge that the care of these patients could have been better, this is a relatively low number of incidents for a hospital of this size”.

The understaffed hospital has been told by the Department of Health that it urgently needs to improve its quality of care.

“Patients have been seriously let down by the standards of care at North Middlesex. This situation must change and NHS Improvement is supporting the trust so patient care is quickly improved,” said a Department of Health spokesperson.

On Wednesday the Guardian reported that the CEO of the hospital, Julie Lowe, has received a warning that several NHS bodies want to shut the A&E department due to the poor care, quality and safety shown to patients and junior doctors.

The General Medical Council, medical regulator, Health Education England and the NHS’s staffing agency have advised the A&E department close, this is the first time in the history of the NHS that a warning such as this has been issues to an emergency department.

Lowe said: “We are working hard with our partners to resolve the issues in our emergency department and bring about the improvements we all want for our patients and hardworking staff.”
