Patient Suffers As Hospital Fails To Diagnose Broken Foot
A 65-year-old woman has been left with lifelong pain and injury, leaving her unable to walk properly as a result of medical misdiagnosis. After a fall, the woman experienced pain in her foot and visited the Hull Royal Infirmary. At the fracture clinic of the hospital, the patient was told she had an old injury and was sent away.
The woman continued to suffer and repeatedly went to doctors because of her continuing pain. Every time, the woman was sent away without the fracture in the foot being diagnosed. After a long struggle and dismissal from doctors, the patient contacted Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) to make a complaint about her treatment. Over a year later, the woman was finally seen by a foot injuries specialist.
It was this specialist who told her that she had developed a joint disease. This was as a result of the breakdown of the bone, joint and cartilage that was not treated initially. Due to the length of time and condition of the foot, there was no option for corrective surgery.
Due to the lack of treatment and care at the fracture clinic, the woman continues to suffer. She was forced to quit her job as she was unable to put weight on her foot. After the injury, she claims her life ‘took a sudden downward spiral’.
The patient sought legal action against the hospital. Hull Royal Infirmary offered an ‘unreserved apology’ to the woman. She also claimed compensation to cover the costs of pain medication, orthotic shoes and money to purchase a bungalow as she requires ground floor accommodation because of the life-changing injuries.
What Negligence Claimline say
No one should have to suffer unnecessary pain or irreversible injury as a result of medical negligence. A misdiagnosis can be incredibly difficult as many people do not know what their condition is or how to treat the pain.
In some cases, an apology for misdiagnosis may be enough. However, sometimes you need financial compensation to get your life back on track. With the patient above, she required finances to cover her living situation as well as purchasing products to help her injury.
If you have suffered a life-changing injury as a result of a misdiagnosis, then you could be entitled to compensation. Tell us your story, and we can give you the free advice and support you need with your potential claim.
