Six Figure Payout For Cancer Misdiagnosis

A 27-year-old mother has just received a six-figure payment from a medical defence organisation after medical negligence meant her condition was not taken seriously. In 2013, aged 23, the woman started to notice symptoms attributed to cervical cancer, but she was too young to be offered a smear test.

For 17 months, the woman made repeat visits to the doctors to seek help and diagnosis for her condition where she experiences constant bleeding and pain. Despite the symptoms and the fact that her health deteriorated after she gave birth to her son, doctors still failed to diagnose her condition correctly.  

In March 2015, the woman’s condition was eventually diagnosed after she admitted herself to the hospital when she suffered blood loss. After hospital tests, it became apparent that the woman had a 9cm-long tumour. As a result, the woman had to undergo extensive chemotherapy as well as a hysterectomy, leaving her unable to have any more children.

Had the woman been diagnosed earlier, there is a chance that she would have had less invasive treatment, may not have had to have such devastating chemotherapy and may still be able to have more children. It was discovered that the GP had not followed the national guidelines which include a physical examination and a referral to a gynaecologist.
