Record Damages for Cerebral Palsy Victim

While giving birth should be a cause for celebration. For many new parents, it can be a worrying time. When the time comes to go to the maternity ward, you are left in the care of the medical staff. Recent research shows that a mistake is made by medical personnel in one in every five births. When medical mistakes happen, they can devastate and have a profound effect on lives forever.

Nine years ago, two parents in Country Antrim were looking forward to welcoming their little girl to the world. However, during labour, their child was starved of oxygen. During the delivery, mistakes were made leading to delays in the birth which meant the baby suffered from oxygen starvation. As a result, the baby girl had severe brain damage which has left the now nine-year-old girl with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral Palsy can cause varying degrees of disability but in this case, her family had to adapt their home at great expense, to suit her needs. As well as this, the girl also requires round the clock care.

In this case, the girl is expected to receive damage payments over £8 million, which is one of the highest medical negligence sums to be awarded in Northern Ireland due to her catastrophic injuries.

Of course, any family would rather the medical negligence and errors did not occur. However, if families do suffer as a result of a maternity blunder and a claim for clinical negligence is won, then settlement for damages can go a long way in helping to improve the treatment and care for those who have suffered at the hands of medical staff.

Clinical Negligence does not have to happen at the hospital, it can also occur at your GP surgery, Dentist, Care Home or even at the Opticians, in fact medical negligence can occur anywhere that a medically trained person provides any type of health related care.

Negligence Claimline says;

In this instance, the injuries suffered by the girl were severe, leading to permanent, irreparable damage which has meant a high cost of treatment and care for her, for the rest of her life. This instance could have been avoided if errors by medical staff did not occur.

Of course, we put a great deal of trust in medical professionals who have a duty of care to look after us. Misdiagnosis and poor treatment that leads to injury and life-changing conditions are all reasons to claim damages that can help to take away the financial burden that comes with medical negligence. If your medical treatment falls below your standards, then you could have grounds to make a claim.
