Thousands Of New Hip Replacement Claims On The Horizon
Following a new safety alert by MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency), it is thought that thousands of new Metal on Metal hip replacement claims may be made against the NHS and manufacturers.
The potential of new claims comes from a warning that the side effects of metal on metal (MoM) hip implants, which includes metallosis and aseptic lymphocyte-dominated vasculitis-associated lesions (ALVAL), are far more toxic than first thought.
A manufacturer of the MoM implants is already facing a trial in October 2017. Around 600 patients are taking legal action against the manufacturers DePuy, owned by Johnson & Johnson due to soft tissue injuries which have been caused by the implants.
It is reported that to date, tens of thousands of patients with Mom Implants have had complications arising from them, some have even developed tumours from the toxins.
MHRA say the majority of recipients of MoM hip replacements have correctly functioning implants however some patients will, over time, develop progressive soft tissue reactions due to the particles released by wear.
Joint actions regarding the hip implants have featured in the news quite frequently. It is thought that the manufacturers of the implants were fully aware of the complications arising from them a long time before the product was recalled.
